20 years ago, the municipal utility of Murau was already thinking about the investment in renewable energies. At this time, implementation was still a difficult undertaking, but ambition and perseverance have paid off. They even won several prizes, such as the International Foodtec Award 2015 (in gold) for the transformation of thermal energy systems. In 2011, the construction of the district heating station Murau-Stolzalpe was decisive for this transformation.

In the heating station, a five MW hot water boiler was built by Burkhardt's partner Agro Forst- und Energietechnik, which is supplied by two wood chip silos. The silos are filled directly with exclusively regional wood chips, because of the unique design in the slope. The produced heat is feeding into an 11.2 km long district-heating network to the current customers.

One of the first heat consumers was the state hospital Stolzalpe, which is 2.2 km away. A short time later, the brewery Murau with its surrounding buildings got the connection to the local heating network. The entire brewery uses only local heat because of a special energy swing and new brewing pans. Therefore, the Murauer brewery is the first brewery in Europe, which makes the brewing process below 115 °C.

The local authority Murau-Stolzalpe decided to retrofit the heating plant with combined heat and power plants from Burkhardt - three wood gasifiers V3.90 and three CHPs ECO 165 HG, because of the increase of heat consumers and to ensure a continuous base load. In the future, these highly efficient plants will supply a total of 495 kW of green electricity and 780 kW of heat to the electricity and heating grids. One of the existing silo will be using as a pellet storage.

The installation of the combined heat and power plants will schedule for autumn 2018. The commissioning will take place in early 2019.
